Should My Child Get Dental Sealants?

This simple preventive measures could protect your child’s teeth from decay.sealants

We all know how difficult it can be to thoroughly brush away plaque and food from every crevice of your back teeth. All you have to do is look at your molars and you can see how easy it could be for food to get trapped. As you might imagine, back teeth are the most susceptible to decay, particularly in children. Even once your children learn how to brush they may miss spots on those back teeth. This is where our Okemos, MI, dentist Dr. Eric Eby comes in. We can easily protect those teeth with dental sealants.

What are dental sealants?

Sealants are made from a clear medical-grade plastic material that is painted over and hardened on the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars. Sealants are a great preventive measure to take to prevent food and plaque from getting trapped in the grooves of the back teeth’s chewing surfaces.

How are sealants placed?

Once the back teeth have been thoroughly cleaned and dried a special solution is placed over the back teeth to roughen the chewing surfaces so that the sealant material sticks to the tooth. Then the solution is rinsed off the tooth and the tooth is dried before the sealant is applied. When the sealant is applied it will go on as a liquid but harden in just a few seconds. Sometimes a dental light is directed over the tooth to harden the sealant in place. It will only take a few minutes to place a sealant.

Will getting dental sealants hurt?

Absolutely not! Getting a sealant is completely non-invasive and won’t be painful in the least. The sealant is painted onto the tooth so your child won’t feel any discomfort. It’s truly one of the easiest ways to help prevent childhood decay.

How long do sealants last?

It’s not uncommon for dental sealants to last up to a year or more. Of course, every time your child visits our Okemos, MI, general dentist, he will check it to make sure that everything is fine and that it hasn’t be cracked or has fallen out. If the sealant does fall out, we can easily place another one over the tooth during their next routine visit.
